What is Packet Loss?

Packet loss is when one or more of the data packets being sent fail to reach their final destination and is usually caused by congestion on the network. Packets are either dropped by a network router that became congested (lost packets) or are discarded by the jitter buffer (discarded packets). This sounds like an audio call breaking up when only every other word comes through.
