According to Richard, these core systems centralize control for lighting, air conditioning, shades, security and media. Installation can take anywhere from 12 weeks to 24 weeks and cost $3000 and up, but once completed the systems can be accessed from any room in the home and remotely on the web.

After talk with Richard, George meets with one of his happy customers, George Walden. George shows off his favorite smart home features including a live feed in the master bedroom of the security camera overlooking his pool. George O: Do you know what a smart home is?

Person on the street #1: Ummm, no.
Person on the street #2: Of course - it's related to technology...
Person on the street #3: I would imagine it's something computerized...
Person on the street #4: Something that would have dinner ready for me when I came home from work...
Person on the street #5: I assume a smart house is a house that is equipped with a lot of technology and equipment that would make it smart?

George O: With all the advanced technology out there, it's more common for a homeowner to go high - tech. Today, we're going to show you how to take your place to the 21st century.

Richard Hollander: I'm Richard Hollander I'm with IVCi Home, I'm the managing director and we specialized in Home Automation Solutions. The whole purpose of smart home technology is a very simple premise. You want to be able to control all of these core systems of your house - lighting, the HVAC, the shades, security. You're able to view it, change it and monitor it through a variety of different sources. Those main sources are any keypad in the home, any touchpannel in the home and when you're out of the home, through the web. The construction process is a long one. It could take anywhere from 12 weeks to 24 weeks depending on the project and the scope of work. In terms of cost, it could be as low as $3,000 and it can go all the way up to however much you want to spend.

George O: After learning about all the smart technology options, I met with homeowner George Walden to find out how he uses these systems in his everyday life.
George O: What exactly can this do?
George W: Everything. It controls the house music, the house lights, the climate and we can also see the security.
George O: So what would you say is your favorite aspect of smart home technology?
George W: I leave the house on vacation, right, I hit vacation scheduler, I'm out the door, lock it up, alarm it and the lights will go on and off in a pattern.
George O: George, can you give me a tour of your house showing me some of you favorite smart home technology features? (They walk around.)
George O: So this here is the Master Bedroom?
George W: Master Bedroom it is..we have security cameras around the house that allow us to look from the Master Bedroom to the outside of the house.
George O: Is this a live feed here (looking at the pool displayed on the Master Bedroom plasma)
George W: Yes it is
George O: So if I went down right now would you be able to see me?
George W: I would be able to see you..
George O: Alright - stay here George... (Runs downstairs and outside by the pool then waves back to the camera.) Hey George, can you see me? - George W. waves back...
George O: What do you have for me next?
George W: We have one other room to show you, so why don't we go back downstairs..
George W: You can access the DVR, you can access cable television, I can access my ReQuest music system
George O: Now let's say your wife wanted to listen to country in the kitchen and you wanted to listen to some of your ReQuest in the Sun Room...is that a problem?
George W: Not an issue. So we're in the Kitchen now, she would put it on her satellite radio and listen to country. And then I'd go back and let's say I wanted to go into the Living Room and then I can pick my sources.
George O: You left one stone unturned. You did not wire the shades...but besides that you did everything else. Lights, climate, security, television, music...what are we talking budget wise?
George W: For this house, something under $250,000.
George O: Now that we've shown you what smart home technology can actually do, hopefully you've become a bit smarter as well...now let's get back to Sarah Gore and this weeks edition of square feet...
