Bronx, NY - March 25, 2004 - Lehman College, City University of New York (CUNY), today unveiled their new, state-of-the-art Speech and Hearing Center in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Maxene and Eugene Posman Speech and Hearing Clinic Library. The center is the latest enhancement to the institution's Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. Speakers included Lehman College president Ricardo R. Fernandez and department chairperson Dr. Deena Bernstein.
The innovative center was designed by IVCi, LLC (www.ivci.com), a leading integrator of managed enterprise conferencing and audio/visual solutions; a firm that last year secured the state-wide Audio/Visual Lab Solution contract (#20040002073), allowing any academic establishment operating within the CUNY and SUNY network to receive equipment and services for speech pathology, psychology and council labs.
IVCi outfitted the new Speech and Hearing Center with leading-edge technology and facilities including six therapy rooms, a master control station, four observation stations, an observation classroom, and a director's office. The system simplifies the complex routing of audio and visual signals to allow any level of user to easily select, monitor and/or communicate with any of the therapy rooms via interactive touch screens-without the assistance of an audio/visual technician. Through the master control or observation stations, the user can select any or all of the therapy rooms for simultaneous or independent use, monitor the therapy sessions (audio and video) and communicate with the therapists via low profile earphones.
The Lehman Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences serves clients ranging from the very young to the elderly, all who receive therapy for many communication disorders including: delayed language development, hearing loss, foreign accent reduction, voice, aphasia, autism spectrum disorders, stuttering, dysphasia and motor speech disorders, among others. Diagnostic and therapeutic sessions are supervised by faculty members who are licensed by the New York State Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, and are all certified by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Through Lehman College's Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, undergraduate students prepare to enter several fields, including: psychology, education, special education and linguistics.
