Smithsonian Implements Wireless Video Conferencing
HAUPPAUGE, NY - March 21, 2006 - IVCi, LLC (www.ivci.com), a leading integrator of enterprise collaboration solutions, including video conferencing, audio visual systems and managed conference services, announced today that it has successfully implemented a unique, wireless video conferencing solution for the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, Maryland.
The Center, which is involved in many different areas of environmental research, sought a way to deliver the on-site educational experience directly into the classroom. Key among SERC's long list of research programs are those that examine shoreline habitats and local fish and blue crabs. "We wanted to maintain the integrity of the education program, which focuses on learning about human impact on our environment, so we were particularly interested in bringing the students right to the site of the research for maximum effect and an enhanced educational experience," said Mark Haddon, Director of Education for SERC. "One important way we could visualize this type of format was through video conferencing."
IVCi, LLC implemented the wireless solution, called the Mobile Video Interactive Companion II (MVIC II), which combined a Polycom video codec and the CIT Wireless product. "We mainly use our MVIC II near the water's edge on docks and beaches where students can see live animals and learn how to take water samples for testing," said Haddon. "We also have the flexibility to board research vessels with the MVIC II and show more advanced sampling methods that help show students how scientists research the Chesapeake Bay. Future components of our distance learning program will include video conferencing with the MVIC II in the forest and wetlands around SERC."
Since its inception, video conferencing has traditionally been conducted in a designated conferencing room. The MVIC II system puts an end to this limitation and brings meetings to new places while providing two-way, high-end group system quality and performance in a compact wireless mobile offering.

About The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center:
(SERC) is the world's leading research center for environmental studies of the coastal zone. For 40 years, SERC has been involved in critical research, professional training for young scientists, and environmental education. The research center, 25 miles from the Nation's Capital, lies along the western shores of the Chesapeake Bay and serves as a hub for studies that extend around the globe. A diverse staff of 16 senior scientists and an interdisciplinary team of more than 180 researchers, technicians, and students conduct long-term descriptive and experimental research addressing such issues as global change, the effects of nutrients and chemicals passing through our landscapes, maintenance of productive fisheries, changes to the environment from biological invaders, and protection of fragile wetlands and woodlands.
