Creating A Truly Immersive ExperienceKeys for successful telepresence implementations.By Timothy M. Hennen, CTS, and Nina Parker As an IT or AV professional, chances are you have an understanding of the basic requirements for video conferencing installations. Now visual collaboration is being taken to the next level with telepresence, a set of technologies that creates the illusion meeting participants are in the same room, when in fact they may be located miles apart. Telepresence achieves this effect with high-definition video and audio, consistent room layouts, and other immersive features. As telepresence grows in popularity, integrators must be aware of the requirements that set telepresence and standard video conferencing implementations apart, and what is needed to create the true telepresence experience. The AV team at IVCi has designed custom and standard telepresence solutions for companies ranging from Fortune 50 corporations to clothing manufacturers and top-ranked universities. Based on this experience we have identified some of the key elements needed to make telepresence implementations a success. Identify decision makers. While video conferencing purchases may be approved at the VP or director level, telepresence requires more of an investment-not only in the cost of the equipment but in the office space required to house it. Expect more than one level of management, including C-level executives, to weigh in on the decision making process. To shorten the sales cycle, outline the return on investment that can be expected with the ongoing use of the technology.
