Visual Communication for Correctional Facilities
The TANDBERG SL Series is designed for video communications in rough environments with details such as a durable Lexan cover and polyethylene case that protect the system from damage. The optional armored telephone handset enables privacy as well as dedicated audio when noise levels within the room are high. The SL Series provides protected connections in prisons and jails where a rugged communication solution is needed most.
The SL Series is perfect for correctional facilities and other intense applications. The TANDBERG SL Series is shown above and below with the optional armored privacy handset.
The TANDBERG SL series is based on the 880 compact videoconferencing unit, which is a fully
featured, low profile device offering operating speeds up to 768 Kbps over an IP network, or 384
Kbps over an ISDN network. The inbuilt camera has full pan/tilt and zoom functions that can be
controlled either locally or from a remote location. The SL series of systems are complete self
contained communications system that incorporates all of the system electronics, including; camera,
15” LCD flat panel display, video codec, power supplies and audio sub system.
The SL systems have been specifically designed for use in a semihostile
environment. Mounted directly below the camera assembly
is a 15” flat panel LCD display, with the complete unit being
housed in a robust Polyethylene housing with a durable Lexan
cover that protects all components from accidental damage as well
as allowing it to be easily wiped down with regular household
cleaners.
The Lexan panel is masked from behind such that the user can only
see the image from the system without having any distraction from
other electronic components within the cabinet. The protective front
panel has been selected to give protection to the LCD display and
all other system components and is capable of withstanding direct
impact from the front by a blunt object or fist.
Embedded within the Lexan front panel is a omni-directional,
highly sensitive miniature microphone that is used for picking up
the audio from anyone in the immediate vicinity in front of the system, and in normal operation this
microphone is always active. Quad speakers are mounted below the unit behind protective grills, with a
high output audio amplifier for use when the system is used in noisy environments.
As an option for the system there is available a privacy armored telephone handset which cuts of the
internal microphone and loudspeakers when lifted from the cradle. Generally the armored handset option
is used for remote visitation or arraignment applications and also lawyer/client conferences where audio
privacy is often required. The system can be supplied with additional audio/video outputs, which can be
used for security monitoring, when required.
TANDBERG SL Series Mounting Arrangements
The complete SL assembly can be wall mounted via an optional
hanging bracket arrangement that allows it to be securely fixed
to the wall via mounting screws that are located behind the
system. This attachment method ensures simple and secure
installation, yet the system can easily be removed for relocation
or replacement by a qualified technician. We would recommend
that the power and network cabling is brought through the wall
into the rear of the system to ensure that it is always available for
usage with the minimum of set up procedure.
When used in a holding area, the system is normally set at such a
height so that when the detainee stands at a pre-determined
location in front of the unit, which can be a simple cross or line
on the floor, he/she clearly sees and hears the officers of the
court at the remote location
Due to the adjustable pan/tilt and zoom functionality, remote adjustments
can be made to allow for variances in height of the detainee. There is also
available for the system table mounting brackets that allow secure fixing
when the system is used with the detainee in a seated position. Although
the holding area system has been primarily designed for permanent
mounting on a wall, it can be supplied with a mobile cart, allowing it to
be easily moved from room to room.
This configuration is often required for telepsychiatry
applications where mobility is needed,
and features such as far end camera control make it
an ideal system for this application. The physical
format of the system makes it ideal for telepsychiatry
as it resembles the form factor of a regular
television making it less threatening than
conventional videoconferencing systems.
